The Center for Pre-College Programs offers a variety of programs for students, including the Saturday Morning STEM (SMS) program.

Saturday Morning STEM (SMS)

The Saturday Morning STEM program is a five-class series of hands-on experiences designed to introduce 5th-12th grade students to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Courses are held in-person at the NJIT Newark Campus.

SMS Middle School Sessions

The SMS Middle School Sessions offer various programs for 5th-8th grade students, including:

• 5th and 6th Grade - Robotics: An interactive course introducing students to the world of creative coding through hands-on exploration with Sphero robots and Makey Makey invention kits.
• 7th and 8th Grade - Chemical and Materials: A program designed to have students explore basic principles of chemistry and materials science, including atomic structure, chemical reactions, and properties of materials.
• 5th and 6th Grade Aeronautical Engineering: A program introducing students to aeronautical engineering through hands-on activities such as building a rocket, creating a hot air balloon, designing an airplane, and making propellers.
• 7th and 8th Grade Forensics Uncovered: A program introducing middle school scholars to the science behind solving mysteries, including fingerprinting, blood spatter patterns, tool mark impressions, DNA analysis, and handwriting and document analysis.
• 5th and 6th Grade Robo Rangers: A hands-on program designed to introduce 5th and 6th-grade students to the exciting world of robotics using the VEX IQ platform.
• 5th and 6th Grade Engineering Explorers: A rotational program introducing students to various engineering thematics, including Chemical and Materials, Energy and Sustainability, Electrical, Biomedical, and Mechanical Engineering.
• 7th and 8th Grade Engineering Innovators: An advanced rotational program that builds on foundational STEM skills while challenging students to think critically and problem-solve like real engineers.
• 7th and 8th Grade CodeQuest: A computer science program designed for students to explore both the technical foundations and real-world applications of coding and technology.

• Program Costs: $399 per student (includes all academic materials)

• Payment Deadlines:
  • Spring '26: Monday, March 16, 2026

SMS High School Sessions

The SMS High School Sessions offer various programs for 9th-12th grade students, including:

• High School - Robotics: A dynamic five-day program designed for high school students, immersing them in the transformative fields of assistive robotics and brain-computer interface (BCI) technology using NeuroMaker.
• High School Power-up with Python: A program designed for students who are interested in learning Python, one of the most popular and versatile programming languages in the world.

Refund Policy

• For all student programs except Academy College Courses and Options for Advanced Academic Achievement, tuition is refundable up until 1 month prior to the start of the program. After this date, tuition is nonrefundable. A written request for the refund must be received prior to the 1 month deadline.
• For Academy College Courses and Options for Advanced Academic Achievement, please note the NJIT add/drop deadlines.
